We are seeking a Technical Writer with experience in Department of Defense (DoD) documentation standards to develop a wide range of technical documents from scratch. You will be responsible for producing high-quality, detailed, and accurate documentation that meets stringent Government quality standards, supporting system design, requirements, testing, and operations.

You must be able to learn complex systems quickly, gather information by interviewing technical staff, and independently produce comprehensive documentation with minimal supervision. This role requires participation in Agile processes and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams.

Responsibilities

  • Create technical documentation including, but not limited to:
      • System Architecture Documents
      • System Requirements Specifications (SRS)
      • Business Requirements Documents (BRD)
      • System Design Documents (SDD)
      • Interface Control Documents (ICD)
      • Requirements Traceability Matrices (RTM)
      • Test Plans, Test Descriptions, Test Cases, and Test Reports
      • Software Installation Plans, Version Descriptions, and Deployment Instructions
      • Operations and Maintenance Manuals (O&M)
      • Standard Operating Procedures (SOP)
      • Release Notes and other deliverables as assigned
  • Design and develop Level 5 Interactive Electronic Technical Manuals (IETMs) compliant with S1000D XML standards.
  • Author, tag, and manage S1000D Data Modules, ensuring revision control and compliance with MIL-STD-3048B.
  • Collaborate with subject matter experts (SMEs) and technical teams to gather information, especially when English is not the first language of interviewees.
  • Attend daily Scrum meetings and contribute as an active Agile team member.
  • Develop supporting visual content, such as screenshots, charts, and diagrams, to enhance documentation.
  • Ensure all deliverables meet 100% of documented Government requirements, with no significant errors, and are logically structured, complete, and fully supported by content.
  • Lead the documentation lifecycle from initial creation through publication and retirement.
  • Support internal training on S1000D and DoD documentation standards when needed.

Required skills and qualifications

  • Bachelor’s or Associate’s Degree in computer science/systems, information systems/technology, natural sciences, social sciences, mathematics, or business/finance. Three years of additional applicable experience may be substituted for a Bachelor’s or Associate’s degree.
  • 3+ years as a technical writer
  • 3 years writing technical documentation that adheres to DOD templates and format
  • Ability to learn a system quickly (for purposes of documentation)
  • Knowledge of SubVersion or GIT version control system a plus.
  • Knowledge of JIRA and Confluence a plus.
  • Secret clearance required to start

    Preferred skills and qualifications

    • Experience with SIGINT systems.
    • A working knowledge of Adobe products such as PhotoShop, After Effects, Premier Pro, and Audition.
    • Experience with XSD, XSLT, XML a huge plus
